Amidst the rapid disappearance of habitats for the narrow-mouth frog (Kaloula borealis) due to rapid urbanization, current ‘alternative habitats’―hastily constructed as post-development compensation―face structural problems such as insufficient assessment of ecological suitability and poor post-construction management. Furthermore, the limitations of this reactive approach are evident, often causing ecological overload by concentrating relocations in specific areas. To overcome the problems of this reactive paradigm, this study aims to propose a proactive conservation strategy by identifying and cataloging potential suitable habitats for K.
borealis in advance, focusing on public urban green spaces where long-term maintenance and management are administratively guaranteed. To this end, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, which has the highest demand and history of creating alternative habitats nationwide, was selected as the spatial scope. For the research methodology, a five-stage spatial model combining Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis and precise field verification was developed and applied.
In Steps 1 and 2, administrative feasibility was secured by excluding legally protected areas and selecting urban green spaces based on national and public lands, resulting in 51 primary candidate sites among 1,608 urban planning facilities in Suwon-si. In Steps 3 and 4, an overlay analysis was conducted on these 51 sites, reflecting the digging habits of K. borealis through subsoil texture (sandy loam), minimum viable area (over 4,400㎡), and macroscopic ecological-axis connectivity, yielding 14 priority candidate sites.
The final field verification in Step 5 confirmed that even sites rated highly on GIS maps had distinct physical and social limitations due to actual micro-topography (steep slopes) and social factors (noise complaints from adjacent high-density residential complexes). Ultimately, Park No. 56 (Yeongheung Forest), which fully satisfied all field-based indicators, was evaluated as the optimal potential site. This study demonstrated, through field data, that K.
borealis habitats in urban areas may not represent the species‘ ideal ecological preference, but rather the result of ‘passive habitat adaptation,’ in which populations were forced to adapt in order to survive within a fragmented environment. This finding suggests to the academic community that when applying the conventional Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) to the unique context of urban environments, field-based calibration of the index must be conducted in parallel. The pre-cataloging framework developed in this study can be utilized as a proactive administrative guideline that simultaneously enhances the efficiency of environmental impact assessments and the ecological quality of habitats.
Furthermore, the selected urban green space candidates can function as a scientific and practical spatial basis for designating Korean Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (K-OECM), thereby substantially contributing to the achievement of national biodiversity conservation goals.
