Recently, in waterside areas, the quality of river water, natural ecosystem, and landscape have been damaged due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, and indiscreet development, and in particular, the flow of non-point pollutant source into a river has a serious adverse impact on the quality of source water, which damage the health of the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, the government purchases the lands in the river basins for the improvement of the quality of source water and the health and diversity of the wetland ecosystem and promotes creative restoration through riparian green spaces and constructed wetlands.
With these river basins, constant purchase and creative ecological restoration will be achieved according to the land purchase policy of the Ministry of Environment in the future. Thus, this study aims to monitor the ecological functions of the river basins restored with riparian green spaces and constructed wetlands and to provide the basic data for the future direction of the restoration of river basins.
This study investigated ecological functions with the riparian green spaces and constructed wetlands that exist in the river basin in the upstream of Gyeongan-cheon, one of the rivers that flow into Paldang Lake, a drinking water source for the population in the capital region and utilized the monitoring data on Sustainable Structured Wetland Biotop in Gileop and riparian green spaces in the upstream of Gyeongan-cheon by Byeon Chan-woo Convergence Ecological Research Institute. As a result of monitoring, it was noted that diverse animals and plants inhabited the riparian green spaces and constructed wetlands in the river basins.
Especially, the constructed wetland is a large area with an aquatic ecosystem, and as a result of an analysis, there was a greater diversity of species in there than in general riparian green spaces. In addition, as a result of monitoring of the constructed wetland created in the Gileop area in the uppermost stream of Gyeongan-cheon, the quality of outflow water was greatly enhanced through the purification mechanism of Sustainable Structured Wetland Biotop with the river water in which sewage water and non-point pollutant source were included as inflow water.
The average water quality reduction efficiency was as follows: BD 46.1%, COD 20.0%, SS 18.2%, T-N 70.2%, and T-P 54.2%, which showed an extremely high throughput, and as a result of monitoring, a healthy ecosystem next to a natural wetland was created, judging from species diversity in the ecosystem and the effect on the improvement of water quality.
To examine the findings of this study, it is expected that increasing the connectivity between green spaces through additional land purchases of the upstream region of Gyeongan-cheon river basin and introducing a non-point pollution reduction facility like a constructed wetland in restoration will increase the efficiency of the ecological functions of the river basins. keyword: waterside areas, riparian green spaces, constructed wetlands
