The current Danyang-eup, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, is the result of the New-Danyang Migration Plan completed in 1985. As the name "New Danyang" suggests, Danyang-eup is not currently called by that name from the beginning. Before the migration plan, the place called Danyang-eup was 7km away from the current Danyang-eup, and is now called Danseong-myeon.
This area, which local people call the “Goo-Danyang”(Old Danyang), was the location of the county office and other government offices until the 1970s. However, in the late 1970s, the development of Chungju Multipurpose Dam was confirmed by the 4 Major River Development Project of the National Comprehensive Physical Development Plan. As the result, 1,675,000 pyeong of land in Danyang was submerged underwater. Accordingly, the Danyang Country Office and related public offices were relocated from the former Danyang to the new Danyang, and about 2,684 households of residents also moved to the New Danyang or other proivince.
After a turbulent period, the community itself has been on the decline due to the loss of regional roles, restrictions on the development of submerged remnants, population decline, and reduced access to public transportation. Meanwhile, New Danyang has been promoting the tourism industry using the scenery of Chungjuho Lake until recently, but the memories of the submerged "hometown" after the migration to New Danyang have faded into oblivion because the historical flow from the Old Danyang is cut off.
Although there is a memorial hall that informs the history of the submersion and migration, it is temporarily closed, and there are no public spaces or programs to remember the Old Danyang, as well as studies to see it as a change in the humanities ecosystem or the manifestation of a new place.
Therefore, this study starts with the question of how to extend the memory of the former Danyang, the location of the submerged Danyang county seat in Chungcheongbuk-do, to commemorate the submerged time and derive a unique place for the "sinking land.” For study, the psychological state of "Nostalgia,” projected in the physical space of "hometown” remembered by the existing generation who experience submersion, is presented as a clue.
For example, based on the characteristics of Nostalgia revealed through the combination of specific "places,” the hometown places are viewed as a psychological integration by collaging the state of experience that the generation gained from surrounding places centered on the "home.” Based on this, the "perceptual unity” given by the existence of members in the submerged district is considered, and the action of memory on "hometown” as a place of Nostalgia is used as a way to realize placeability and interpret the intrinsic order of the submerged district.
The purpose of this study is to examine cases applied in real architecture and cities through theoretical consideration of memory, and to attempt architecture as "the giver” that provides clues of locality in places where traces of time and memory have disappeared by applying Nostalgia's discourse and story of real land.
