초록
This study systematically typologized major projects related to Nature-based Solutions (NbS) implemented in Korea’s agricultural sector and analyzed their validity and performance based on the IUCN Global Standard for NbS and the PRISMA-EcoEvo guidelines. The study was guided by the question: “To what extent are NbS projects in Korea’s agricultural sector aligned with the IUCN international criteria?” A literature review was conducted on agricultural land related projects implemented between 2000 and 2024. Each project was analyzed according to eight criteria, including ecosystem functions, biodiversity, economic feasibility, participatory governance, and science-based management.
The results showed that projects such as the Agricultural Environment Conservation Program, small pond conservation initiatives, and carbon farming pilot projects generally reflected the NbS criteria sufficiently, demonstrating multiple benefits and potential for institutionalization. In contrast, the agricultural promotion zone system and some rice paddy upland field conversion policies were found to require improvement in terms of ecosystem service conservation and governance. In addition, each project was classified into three types according to the level of NbS intervention: minimal intervention type (NbS1), intermediate intervention type (NbS2), and active intervention type (NbS3).
Among these, the NbS2 type was found to make a meaningful contribution to enhancing ecosystem services. In the context of climate change response, where the international community expects NbS to contribute to approximately 37% of greenhouse gas reduction potential, this study emphasizes the need to align NbS projects in Korea’s agricultural sector with international standards.
