초록
The latest date changes in the socialist bloc have affected two Koreas' relation, thus enlarging the expectation for korean reunification. The reunification might not be as easy as expected. Nevertheless, economic exchange between two Koreas has increased after signing "the Basic Agreement on Reconciliation, Nonaggression and Exchange and cooperation between the DPRK (democratic people's republic of korea) and ROK (Republic of korea)" made in 1992. Along with these changes, many researches on the korean reunification issues are conducted. Most of them, however, have focused on political and economic issues after reunification.
Little attentions are paid to the spatial issues after reintegration of both koreas. This study is first step to formulate spatial planning of Unified korea. It attempts to provide basic data on North korea's present situation, particularly its physical and social development including industries, transportation, natural resources and environments. It also compares the level of built environments between two Koreas. It then explores the possible problem after reunification and developmental for the long-term bases. The study finds that economic and developmental gaps between two koreas are wide.
These gaps may not be narrowed in a short run, and cause serious spatial problems, including the excessive population migration from north to south. They will constrain the real integration of two parts. This study tells that spatial planning of Unified-korea should emphasize on developing the Northern part as to reduce the regional gap. The government after reunification will have to take preferential policies in order to improve North korean economic situation, such as installing social and industrial infrastructure, expanding the technological base, and creating more jobs in it which will be most important.
To attain these objects, this report suggests approaches in formulating spatial planning. To epitomize this report, part 2 dealt with north korea a geographical outline, compared economics study of south with north korea. In part 3, examined the north korea land and the present regional development plan condition. Part 4, suggested the national land development plan for korean reunification, and the report ends with its conclusion in part 5.
