Currently, mountains and forests account for 65 percent of the entire Korean land. Those are economic resources that provide a wide variety of things such as wood, food or herbs, and at the same time, they contribute to preserving living things, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen and clear water, and function as a lung for people. In our country, however, mountainous areas are seriously damaged by all sorts of development projects by the government or individuals, and approximately 10 thousand hectares of mountainous districts are used for other purposes.
Unlike the past, people are lately interested in mountains and forests as a place for recreation, owing to the rapid growth of national economy, improved living standard and urbanization phenomenon. The five-day school week and workweek systems make the importance of those areas more accentuated as a place for rest. In the 21st century, an arboretum is no longer viewed as a mere space for the preservation and display of plants and trees. That is now playing more crucial roles in providing a resting place, improving the environment, collecting and raising more plants and trees, enriching the life of man, and stepping up the development of mankind.
A museum could be defined as a space to show the history, culture and life aspects of a nation at the same time, and arboretum and botanic garden could be defined as a green museum to let visitors get a big picture the natural, geographical and biological characteristics of that country. There are a lot of tree gardens in our country, and many are under construction. But the conception of an arboretum isn't yet established clearly, and what it is built for isn't yet defined, either. Moreover, domestic private tree gardens are overly in pursuit of profit only.
The government is trying to develop recreational forest resources to meet the demand for rest that is growing due to increasing free time. A lot of efforts are lately put into developing mountainous regions to create resting spaces, keep the ecosystem intact and protect local trees and endangered plants. Compared to other real-estate development projects, the development of tree gardens serves to minimize the destruction of the ecosystem, preserve unique natural resources and meet the rapidly growing demand for recreation. And in terms of operation and profit, that is as competitive as other real-estate development projects, though the former calls for more investment period.
The purpose of this study was to discuss the efficient development of mountainous regions and the construction of tree gardens in those areas. And it's also attempted to raise awareness on the importance of those regions, identify problems with domestic arboretums, and suggest workable reform measures by making a case study, conducting a survey and reviewing relevant literature in order to be conducive to tree garden builders. Chapter 1 described the background, purpose, method and scope of the study. Chapter 2 explored the usefulness of the development of mountainous regions and arboretums. Chapter 3 examined the consciousness of tree garden visitors. under construction by this researcher.
The conception of that arboretum, its conditions of development and basic plans were studied. Chapter 5 presented how to improve tree gardens in our country. Chapter 6 made a conclusion and explained what limitations this study had.
