서양 근대 슈퍼블록과의 비교를 통한 강남 슈퍼블록의 도시계획적 특성에 관한 연구

강남 슈퍼블록의 도시계획 특성을 서양 근대 슈퍼블록과 비교했다.

본 논문은 강남 슈퍼블록의 도시계획적 특성을 서양 근대도시의 슈퍼블록과 비교하여 그 고유성을 밝히는것을 목적으로 한다. 슈퍼블록 아이디어는 20세기 초 서구도시계획에서 등장해서 자동차용 슈퍼그리드의 간선도로망, 근린주구론, 기능주의적 용도지역제와 함께 제2차 세계대전 후 근대 도시계획의 모델이 되었다. 강남은 서구의 근대 도시계획원리로부터 많은 영향을 받았지만 어느 것도 체계적으로 적용되지는 않았다. 강남의 도시계획과정에서 서구의 근대도시가 개념적 모델로 작용했지만 현실적으로는 기존 서울 도심의 도시구조가 참조되었고, 토지구획정리기법, 노선상업의 용도구역지정과 같은 한국의 도시계획 전통과 관습이 적용되었다. 결과적으로 강남은 슈퍼그리드 간선도로망과 슈퍼블록의 도시로 계획되었지만 서구의 근대도시 모델과는 다르다. 특히 슈퍼블록내부의 좁고 복잡한 가로망과 다양한 스케일의 작은 필지와 건물들, 기능의 혼합, 슈퍼블록 경계부의 선형 용도구역지정은 서양의 슈퍼블록 도시와 다른 강남의 특성이며, 강남 슈퍼블록의 고유한 도시성을 형성한다. 이러한 강남 슈퍼블록의 특성은 서구 근대도시계획원리의 영향에도 불구하고 동아시아의 오랜 도시계획 전통과 문화가 한국의도시형성에 여전히 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다.

This paper studies urban characteristics of Gangnam superblock by comparing it with the superblocks of Western modern urbanism. Superblocks are a product of Western modern urbanism, and became a model for modern urbanism after World War II, with principles such as supergrid arterial road networks for automobiles, functional zoning and neighborhood theories. While Gangnam urban planning was influenced by these principles of Western modern urbanism, none of them were systematically applied to Gangnam.

In the process of planning Gangnam, while Western modern urbanism was a conceptual model, the urban structure of Seoul’s old city center was used as a reference, and conventional urban planning methods such as land-readjustment, linear zoning for commercial areas along with the arterial roads, were adopted as planning tools. As a result, Gangnam, despite the apparent supergrid arterial network and superblock, became quite different from the western urban model.

Especially various patterns of a narrow street network and various scales of small lots and buildings with a mixture of residential and commercial functions are the unique characteristics of Gangnam superblock, which create unique urbanity of Gangnam. These characteristics indicates the continuity of East Asian urban planning tradition in Gangnam superblock in spite of the influences of Western modern urbanism.
